Join us this evening as we look at Sikh and Panjab Heritage. Dr. Nadhra Khan, Harinder Singh, & Inni Kaur explore Sikh History during Colonial and Post-Colonial time frames. They will share and discuss the influences and impacts that outside forces had on Sikh & Panjab lifestyle, geography, and architecture.
Dr. Nadhra Khan - "Issues of Sikh Heritage in Pakistan: Colonial and Post-Colonial Narratives"
She will be exploring the colonial historiography built around the nineteenth-century Sikh architecture in the Punjab and the different areas of its impact. It also attempts to uncover the voice responsible for this discourse and investigates how it continues to reverberate against the walls of important Sikh monuments, casting upon them deep shadows of neglect and apathy.
Harinder Singh - "Prince Waldemar’s Lithographs of Undivided Panjab"
165 years ago, a German book published lithographs of Panjab’s rivers, cities, forts, wars, and memorials. A few years ago, the Panjab Digital Library received its copy for digitization from a private collection. This presentation shares some of the Prussian Prince and Major General Waldemar’s lithographs from Panjab published in 1853 entitled "In Memory of the Travels of Prince Waldemar of Prussia to India 1844-1846."
About the Speakers:
Dr. Nadhra Khan is Assistant Professor of Art History at Lahore University of Management Sciences, Lahore, Pakistan. She specializes in the history of art and architectural ornament of nineteenth-century Panjab but her research and teaching interests also cover the earlier Mughal and later colonial visual culture of this region. She has held research fellowships at SOAS, London (Charles Wallace Fellowship, 2010–2011), Paris (2015), Princeton (Fulbright, 2014–2015), and Oxford (Barakat Trust 2014–2015). She has worked with the Aga Khan Cultural Service, Pakistan (AKCSP), as Consultant Historian for their Lahore Fort Picture Wall project. Her monograph entitled The Samadhi of Maharaja Ranjit Singh: A Summation of Sikh Architectural Features and Ornament will appear later in 2017.
