The Sikh Research Institute Canada (SikhRI Canada) launched their newest project “The Vidia Mentorship Programme” on Friday, 10 January 2014. This program was designed to connect young Sikh students with Sikh professionals in their areas of interest to empower them to succeed.

The event was attended by over 120 guests, which included Mentors, Mentees and Members of the community that packed a lecture hall at the SFU Surrey Campus.

The evening agenda included presentations by Harinder Singh (CEO and Founder of SikhRI), on “The Importance of Leadership and Mentorship as a Sikh” and a presentation by Parminder Singh (Board of Advisor of SikhRI), on "Sikhi and Professionalism" followed by a Q&A session with a panel that included Arshdeep Singh (Student/Mentee), Puneet Kaur Sandhar (Lawyer/Mentor), Navneet Kaur Bains (Vidia Project Liaison Coordinator) and Harinder Singh of SikhRI.

In the coming weeks, SikhRI and the Vidia Working Committee will be planning on matching mentors with mentees and will offer similar networking events to encourage positive relationship building and role modeling.

The Sikh Research Institute Canada is a registered charity that focuses on the internal development of the Sikh community through education. It provides innovative programming and strives to design and host events that bring Sikhs and non-Sikhs of the community members together.

Rana Singh of Surrey, BC attended the event and said, "The Sikh Research Institute Vidia initiative is an extremely important and very necessary program to have in our community. While I truly believe that one can acquire knowledge from anywhere, getting a perspective from someone who is in your own community and in your chosen field is invaluable. I will recommend this to my friends."

Anita Grewal (student) of Surrey, BC also commented “By being a pat of this program, I feel a stronger sense of Sikh community & a strong desire to help one another. This has had a positive impact on me & motivated me to pursue my dreams with an open mind & not be boggled down with money & what others may think. It gives me a sigh of relief knowing if I ever need a mentor or I can help someone else, there is Vidia."
