The Sikh Education Conference is fast approaching, and we want to make sure you're registered to attend! The Conference promises to be a dynamic, passionate gathering of educators, administrators, counselors and curriculum developers working in the field of Sikh Education-- so if you're looking for fresh ideas or inspiration for your classroom in the new year, get yourself to Stamford, Connecticut, on 24 September!
It's also a great idea to connect with the SEC event page where you can see who else is going, get in on discounted hotel reservations, and maybe find the perfect carpool!

UK Tour

From 26 August to 4 September, SikhRI was on busy tour of London, Birmingham and Glasgow. With programming for married couples, activists, and students of history and linguistics, there was something for everyone on the schedule!

Check out the Press Release, "Wisdom-driven Rebuilding in the UK" for full details on the trip!

Thanks to our dedicated camera people, we also have lots of great new video to share. You can see footage of the talks on our Video and Podcast page

Kansas City

In late August, members of SikhRI's education team traveled to Kansas City, MO, to lead a Level I Teacher Training. "This training workshop helped me to think outside the box," said Satvir Kaur, from Overland Park, KS. "I was amazed how there are so many different ways to engage our kids. I have learned my strengths and weaknesses through this workshop. Now, I’ll be able to teach them with confidence.

There was other programming over the weekend as well. "Gurduara: Place of Learning" was presented on 19 August and explored the historical roots of the concept of the Gurduara and the successes and challenges of the modern institution in honoring those values. There was also a session which is always highly popular for young children: Getting to Know Vahiguru. This fun workshop used hands on, interactive fun to pull in examples from nature when talking about the qualities of Vahiguru.

Finally, there was a talk on "Sikh Education" which traced the SikhRI approach to developing constructive, effective educational methods in our communities today, and how others can get excited and involved with this Education Revolution!

SikhRI aired two webinars in the last month with the help of some truly inspired presenters!

On 20 August, Davinder Pal Singh and Daljit Ami presented "De-Freezing 1930s Panjab." Drawing on their experiences working at the Panjab Digital Library and doing other archiving and historical research, the two presenters took on a tour or Panjab, mainly using photos taken by Bhai Dhana Singh on a bicycle tour of the shrines of Panjab at that time. In pulling back the door to explore places through primary documents over a life span of nearly 80 years, the presenters also took the time to emphasize the importance of making preservation a priority to afford this sort of historical study and the wonder of discovery for future generations.

On 10 September, Ravinder Singh presented "Awakening to Purpose," which invited attendees to examine the Japji as a guide to a purpose driven life. Paying particular attention to the function of the Hukam, the power of attentive listening to transform an individual, and the spiritual toolbox imparted to Sikhs everywhere by Guru Nanak, the webinar urged attendees to focus their energy and attention toward turning manmat (psychological lead) to Gurmat (spiritual gold).

If you were unable to attend "De-Freezing 1930s Panjab" or "Awakening to Purpose," you're in luck! Both recordings, and tons more video content, are available on SikhRI's Vimeo page.

Registration and attendance for any Liv webinar is offered free of charge, but donations to assist SikhRI in offsetting the costs of hosting these sessions is always gratefully appreciated.

Remembering 9/11

On 11 September, Inderpreet Singh and others in the Massachusetts area gathered at Hatch Shell in Boston to participate in readings and a moment of remembrance for the victims of the terrorist attacks.

In New Jersey, at the Bridgewater Gurdwara, Harinder Singh spoke to 800 people on ways to resist the hate which fueled the attacks, through acceptance of coexistence and respect for all.
Families Events in LA

On 27 August Jasmine Kaur presented three events in Orange County, CA. "Getting to Know Vahiguru" is especially for young people, and takes examples from nature to teach about the attributes of Vahiguru. "Nurturing a Sikh Child" is a chance for parents to come together for a dynamic workshop to discuss challenges, and strategies for success when raising a happy, proud young Sikh!

"Love and Sikhi" was put together for a group of teenagers and takes stories from the Guru and lessons from Gurbani to examine the concept of love and how we show it for ourselves, each other, and the natural world. Participants worked through scenarios where the lessons and values of love could be applied to help guide participants in making decisions.

Seeking Volunteers

Seeking Volunteers for Regular Webinar Support

SikhRI seeks web savvy volunteers who would be willing to assist us once a month with moderating and hosting Liv webinars. Training would be provided by our IT Coordinator. Webinars are offered on Saturday mornings (in the US) and generally last 1.5 hours, but time on the front and back-end would be needed from the volunteer as well. "Real-time" availability would be required. If interested, please write info@sikhri.org and we will send you a more complete description of the tasks involved.

In Gratitude

SikhRI Deeply Grateful for Donation of New Pens

The time came last month to reorder a supply of writing pens, which are used by participants at SikhRI events, and it was with great surprise and humble gratitude that SikhRI found Kikli and the Ujjaldidar Singh Memorial Foundation had offered to underwrite this much needed supply.

As a small, mission-driven nonprofit, donations keep SikhRI vibrant and viable, we couldn't do it without each and every one of our donors. We want to thank Kikli, the Ujjaldidar Singh Memorial Foundation, and all our donors and supporters for everything you do to keep SikhRI strong and relevant.

Thank Yous

Sikh Research Institute exists to serve the community's education needs. As we strive to fulfill our mission of empowerment through education, we cannot be successful without the endless support of volunteers. Thank you to all of our volunteers this month who continue to inspire us with their strength, dedication, and passion!
