Sidak 2011

The two weeks of Sidak seemed to fly by, but the days were certainly full to the brim with classes, divans, organized activities, exercise, and wonderful food and friends. This year, participants came from Canada, the US and Scotland to attend SikhRI's annual leadership development experience. Additionally, a "Junior Sidak" program was offered for young children during class hours, in order to make it possible for parents and families to attend. To read the the whole Sidak story, please check out the PR, "Sidak Trains Next Generation's Leaders." And of course, Like Us on Facebook for access to photos, video and to be a part of the post-Sidak conversation.

Summer Sevadar

We want to take this space to thank each and every volunteer who came out to help us make Sidak 2011 a success. In all, there were 40 meals bought, prepared, and served by members of the local sangat. In addition to all these tasty contributions, community members came in to instruct classes, assist with Junior Sidak, and to lead organized activities according to their professional and personal skills. We say it every year, but we never mean it any less: We couldn't do this without you! Thanks!

Examining Sikh Sovereignty

Harinder Singh, chief programming officer for SikhRI, presented three events over the course of a week which examined different facets of the historical and theological call for Sikh Sovereignty. The first, "Miri Piri: The Sikh Sovereignty" took place on 18 June at the Sikh Sabha Gurudwara in Fairfax, VA. The talk, attended by 40 people, explored the double-edged sovereignty of Sikhi and the ways that Sikhs can live so as to honor the political and spiritual responsibilities of this calling.

The following weekend of 25 and 26 June, at Gurdwara Sikh Cultural Society in Richmond Hills, NY, Harinder Singh presented two sessions: "June 1984: The Attempted Suppression of Nation" and "Khalsa Raj & Banda Singh Bahadur." About 1,000 people attended "June 1984," where Harinder Singh traced the history of the '84 attacks through a religious, political and cultural lens. You can watch video of the 1984 talk here. About 1,500 people attended "Khalsa Raj" which placed the life of Banda Singh Bahadur in the context of the Guru's mission, explored the importance of his actions at the time, and the resonance of his legacy today. You can watch video of the Banda Singh Bahadur talk here.

Liv

On 9 July, Harinder Singh and Surenderpal Singh, research associate for SikhRI, presented a Liv webinar on the topic: "Confronting Religious and Political Corruption." The webinar, which was attended by 47 people, looked at the role of a Divine-remembering, self-aware individual as a spiritual and political actor. The presentation also used Babar Bani to explore the nexus between religion, society, politics, and the Divine will.

If you were unable to attend the webinar, you can watch a recording of it here.

While webinars are offered to the public free of charge, they are not free of cost to SikhRI. Donations of any amount in support of Liv are always gratefully accepted. There is also the option to sponsor a webinar as an individual or organization! What a great team-building exercise or a gift in honor of someone special!

Infinite Wisdom Day

On 7 July, SikhRI hosted the 2nd Infinite Wisdom Day at the Concept Therapy Institute in San Antonio, TX. A panel of nine speakers, representing a variety of spiritual and moral philosophies, came together to share thoughts on the topic "Resistance, Rebellion & Revolution." The speakers took 5-7 minutes to make individual remarks, followed by a Q&A session with the audience. More than 70 people attended the event. You can read the full press release, "Panel Contemplate 'Resistance, Rebellion & Revolution," and you can also watch video footage of the speakers.
