Remembering 1984

Over the weekend of 3-5 June, SikhRI facilitated events in Canada and the US that were intended to commemorate and educate communities about the events of 1984. The event schedule also included programming to strengthen communities in their relationships to each other, to Vahiguru and to the language of Gurbani.

To read the complete story, please open our press release on the weekend's events, "Loading the Weapon of Knowledge."

Infinite Wisdom Day

Infinite Wisdom Day 2011: "Resistance, Rebellion & Revolution"

The second Infinite Wisdom Day is set for 7 July 2011. This year's topic, "Resistance, Rebellion & Revolution" promises a lively discussion rooted in both history, and the relevant happenings in the contemporary world. A multi-faith panel has been set, which includes a wide range of religious and philosophical views.

Dinner will be served and the event is free and open to the public. If you will be in or around San Antonio at that time, we hope very much that you will join us! RSVP for the event by e-mailing info@sikhri.org or calling the office at 210.757.4555 to let us know how many in your party will be joining us! Also, if you are able to attend, you will have a chance to meet all of our 2011 Sidakers-- an opportunity not to be missed!

SYANA Retreat

On 29 May, Inderpreet Singh presented "Sarbat Khalsa" at the Sikh Youth Alliance North American Retreat in Holly, MI. The talk traced the history of the Sarbat Khalsa as an important decision-making body in Sikh history. Participants were also asked to recreate a Sarbat Khalsa as a group in order to better understand the challenges of making a decision for the good of the collective, rather than to further an individual interest.

Liv

"Creating the Next Generation of Sikh Institutions"

On 21 May, Kulvir Singh Gill presented the Liv Webinar "Creating the Next Generation of Sikh Institutions." The webinar traced the inception of the Seva Food Bank and told the story of the group of young Sikh-Canadians who set out to create a permanent institution to bring together the local community, and to put the Sikh ideals of seva and sarbat da bhalla into service.

Using the story of the Food Bank, Kulvir Singh Gill talked about service and institution-building as critical aspects of forging better relationships between the Sikh and non-Sikh communities and creating a positive image of Sikhs for the general public. If you missed the chance to attend the webinar, you can still check out the recording.

Liv webinars are offered at least once a month, and SikhRI covers the registration costs! So all you have to do is show up for a topic that's interesting to you and join in the global learning experience! The next webinar, "Confronting Religious & Political Corruption" is scheduled for 25 June.

While webinars are offered to the public free of charge, they are not free of cost to SikhRI. Donations of any amount in support of Liv are always gratefully accepted. There is also the option to sponsor a webinar as an individual or organization! A great team-building exercise or a gift in honor of someone special!

Sikhi-Driven Life

On 22 May, Harinder Singh presented to an audience of about 70 people at Guru Nanak Satsang Sabha, Vasant Vihar, in New Delhi. His talk, "Sikhi-Driven Life" explored ways that we can go about finding our purpose in life, the historical roots of the Gurduara and its roots today as a place of support and knowledge to Sikhs, and the responsibilities that Sikhs everywhere have to their communities and to society as a whole.

SikhRI Announces 4th Sikh Education Conference

We would like to invite educators, administrators, counselors, curriculum developers, and anyone else who is interested in attending the 4th Sikh Education Conference, which will be held in Stamford, Connecticut, on 24 September.

The Conference is an opportunity to come together as those concerned and involved with the course of Sikh Education in North America, and to influence its future direction. There will be forums where those in attendance can share their own ideas, challenges, and successes working in the field, presentations on relevant topics (for a list of past presentations click here) and workshops that demonstrate innovative teaching techniques using SikhRI's signature "hands on" style.

More details will be coming soon, but if you are interested in attending, presenting at, or sponsoring a portion of the Conference, please contact us at info@sikhri.org.

Thank Yous
