Strengthening Sikh Families
Trips to Ontario & DC Showcase Programming for Children, Teens, Parents & Educators Over three weeks in April and early May, SikhRI reached more than 700 people with a wide variety of programming at Gurduaras, Gurmat and Panjabi Schools and some private schools in cities in Ontario and around the DC-area. With several "Getting to Know Vahiguru" workshops for young children, seminars on the environment and being a Sikh teenager in America, as well as programming for parents of Sikh children, and a teacher training for educators-- there was something for everyone over the busy schedule of events!
Jasmine Kaur, SikhRI's director of education, facilitated the tour and said that she was very pleased with the way the wide variety of programming was received by the different audiences. “The message we try to impart in the workshops and presentations always comes back to developing ways to become Guru-centered in their daily life by speaking to the sorts of ideas and challenges that everyone encounters at different points in their development as Sikhs,” said Jasmine Kaur. “Reaching people isn’t just about getting them in the room for a few hours one afternoon, it’s about providing them with tools and information they can use and build on long after they leave.” You can click here to read the press release "Interactive Educational Events Strengthen Sikh Families," which includes pictures, voices from participants and organizers, and links to video testimonial. You can also check out our album on Facebook to see lots of fun photos from the events over the two weeks in Ontario.

Articles
Harinder Singh had an article, "Introspection: Preparing for Canada's May 2 Federal Election," published on sikhchic.com. Rather than endorsing specific candidates, Harinder Singh explored the great challenges and responsibilities that voting entails, drawing inspiration from Gurbani and civics. Though the election is over, there's still plenty of thought-provoking material!
Jasmine Kaur was quoted in an LA Times article, "Holding on to the Sikh Heritage in the US." The piece covers the rise of Gurmat and Panjabi schools in the US, language curriculum, and other ways that the Sikh community makes cultural and historical education an important part of daily life for children, ensuring that Sikhi remains strong and vibrant in the US.
