Anand Karaj

Spotlighting the centennial of the Anand Karaj Marriage Act of 1909
This past month, to commemorate the signing of the Anand Karaj Act into law in 1909, SikhRI launched articles and videos through our web site on this history of this historic law and its resonance today. Though passed under the British colonial occupation of India, the Anad Karai Act was groundbreaking in that explicitly recognized Sikhi as a unqiue way of life with equally valid and unqiue customs, specifically the marraige rites.

The material created by SikhRI and released in October explore the significance of the act at the time of its passage, and the text guiding the Sikh marriage ceremonies then and today. The materials also highlight the anniversary of the act as an appropriate event for Sikhs everywhere to call publicly for the respect and recognition these unique cultural rites deserve under today's Indian government. Please read for yourself SikhRI's well-rounded and informational piece and take a some time as well with the accompanying video.

Testimonials

Being Sikh in America: An Inconvenient Choice
It was a great workshop lecture. I really appreciated how Harinder virji brought to light the shortcomings of the Sikh community and placed the responsibility on us to fight for ourselves, and in the process, take ourselves back to our Sikhi roots. It wasn't the type of lecture I expected to hear, but I feel it is one that all Sikhs should hear; a lecture to shake us out of our complacency and inactivity.
- Gurpreet Randhawa, Texas A&M University, College Station, TX

AMSA Faith Panel
The faith panel really opened my eyes to the wide variety of cultures and beliefs. In particular, I found the Sikh faith to be the most intriguing as, before now, I couldn't even fathom a religion without having set leaders and figures of authority. . . . But thanks to the insight from the Sikhs as well as from the rest of the faith panel, I realized that faith is a personal journey. Now I understand that my faith/beliefs should come from my own personal experience with God, not from another man's interpretation.
- Windrik Lynch, Texas A&M University, College Station, TX

Teacher Training Level-I
My experience at this program was very good and knowledgeable so i think we should have this every 6 months. . . . This changed me by giving me better teaching skills. I would recommend this to parents that want to teach thier children about being a Sikh.
- Jagwant Kaur, Brampton, ON, Canada

The Guru-Connecting with the Divine Light

"Gave me a direction and a new meaning to my understanding of "Sikhi." Helped me to relate to the Sikh community t large and the common ideology that unites us."
- Simran Singh Dhillon, Bedford, MA

Delhi 1984: Presentation & Panel Discussion
"... having followed academic opinions on the 1984 pogroms I was surprised to have actually learnt things I didn't know. I was impressed and swayed by the arguments of Harinder Singh who I thought articulated his views very well and concisely, and the use of non-sikh sources removed any pre-conceptions of bias I might have had."
- Harnek Singh Randhawa, Oxford University, Oxford, UK

Sikhi Today: Dialogue on Glorious Heritage
". . . . It was without a doubt one of the best talks we've had at UCL Sikh Society during my 3 years at the university. The talk was unlike any other we've heard before, and not only was it informative and interesting, but we all found his unique approach to be very refreshing. His talk was delivered with such passion and expertise, that’s others were inspired to seek further knowledge in this field.”
- Pashmina Kaur Kohli, UCL Sikh Society, London, UK

Delhi Anti-Sikh Pogroms November 1984
"It was refreshing to hear candid views from the panel and the audience - it really made this event stand out and delivered where other events have fallen short. Thank you for this insight!"
- Sharan Kaur, Cambridge University Alumni, Cambridge, UK
