Liv

On 22 December, 23 people attending the webinar "Sikhi in Thought, Word & Deed" faciliated by Jasmine Kaur with special guests, Young Khalsa Girls.

The webinar explored the character traits that define a Sikh and how to nurture and develop those traits in ourselves as individuals, and in our children as parents and as educators. Young Khalsa Girls came in to share their experiences strengthening those traits in their own lives, and living them as proud Sikhs in their communities.

This was the last webinar of 2012-- thanks to everyone who attended a webinar this year or donated to keep Liv going strong and the registration process free for all who would like to attend. Your donations are critical to the success of Liv webinars and any amount makes a difference!

Also, we are looking for volunteer who would be willing to moderate a Liv webinar next year. A few hours is all that is needed, and you could become an integral part of the webinar team! Please email: sara.stroo@sikhri.org if you are interested or would like to learn more.

Tri State Trainings

Jasmine Kaur, director of education, and Harliv Kaur, curriculum developer, led trainings in Connecticut over the weekend of 8-9 December for Teachers, Students and Parents.

The Advanced Teacher Training invited educators to integrate a variety of teaching styles into their classroom techniques to reach as many different students as possible. There were also sessions which emphasized developing activities and resources to enhance language learning.

The student and parent workshops focused on developing self confidence, at home, at school, and while raising a family. Surender Pal Singh developed the presentation materials for the workshops.

Jasmine Kaur also spoke to the gurduara sangat on Sunday about the importance of supporting Sikh educators and the profound impact that confident, well-trained teachers can make on the community at large.

You can read the Press Release about the weekend's events: Trainings Inspire Confidence in Classroom, Home and Self

Feel Your Guru

Harinder Singh spoke at the Garden State Sikh Association in Bridgewater, NJ, on 2 December on the topic "How to Feel Your Guru?" You can also read his corresponding article, "Did I Light Up?", a shortened version of which appeared on SikhChic.

That same weekend Harinder Singh led a Parents Workshop in Bridgewater, "Sikhi & Parenting,"which was designed to facilitate a constructive dialogue on making Sikhi part of the home life and routine of the family.

Responses and Resources for CT shooting

In response to the tragic shootings at an elementary school in Newtown, CT, SikhRI would like to offer these resources for parents and educators who will be talking to and caring for youngsters in the coming weeks, as we continue to cope with this inexplicable act.

Please see this video, "Talking to Your Kids," from Director of Education, Jasmine Kaur, which was filmed in response to the shootings at the Oak Creek Gurduara in Wisconsin this summer and contains advice for talking with children about danger and violence.

Also after Oak Creek, SikhRI prepared a document for all adults who will be caring for children at times like these: Helping Children Deal with a Traumatic Event: A Guide for Parents & Children.

President of SikhRI Canada, Baljinder Kaur Narang, was interviewed on OMNI TV in BC as part of the coverage of the event, and offered a response to the incident as Chair of the Burnaby Board of Education.

On 16 December, Harinder Singh spoke at Sikh Sabha of New Jersey on "Culture of Violence: Lessons from the Sahibzade Legacy."
