4G UK Tour

From 8 to 17 June, SikhRI was in Scotland and England for the "4G Tour: Guru, Gender, Genocide & Gurmata." The tour featured events exploring the revolution of gender equality envisioned by the Guru, the contemporary power of the Sarbat Khalsa, the events of 1984, and a conference for UK-based Sikh educators. Hundreds turned out to join in the learning and discussion.

Sidak Deadline Extended!

If you were interested in attending Sidak this year, but haven't gotten in your registration materials, you're in luck! We will consider applications for Sikhi 201 and Gurmukhi 101 through the first week of July. Unfortunately, Sikhi 101 is full at this time, but there is still room in the other two tracks and we'd love to have you be a part of the tenth year of our popular leadership development program!

Learn more about the program and the details on the two tracks of study still open at Sidak, and register today by visiting our Sidak homepage.

Liv Webinars

On 2 June, SikhRI hosted the webinar "Tipping Point or Historical Blip?" which was formatted as a roundtable discussion with the panelists Navkiran Kaur Khalra, Santbir Singh, and Rubin Paul Singh and Inderpreet Singh moderated. The discussion revolved around the impact of the Panjab partition and the events of 1984 on the Sikh diaspora, the relationship of diasporic communities with the homeland and India, the aspiration of the Sikhs, and the place of the inherent sovereign spirit in Sikh daily life.

Beginning with the question: Was the recent Rajoana episode a tipping point in the revival of the Sikh sovereign spirit? Or was it yet another historical blip in the long legacy of Sikh cyclical prosperity and protest? The panelists and audience members created a lively online discussion. If you missed this webinar, you can access the recording on Vimeo and on YouTube.

On 23 June, Inni Kaur and Jasmine Kaur shared a Saakhi: "Ik Oankar: God's Light in All" in a webinar for young children and their families. The recording will be available on YouTube and Vimeo soon.

The next webinar is scheduled for 14 July. Harinder Singh will present: "Sexuality in Sikhi: Confronting the Taboos." Registration is free, but donations are critical to the continued strength of Liv webinars and your generosity in supporting our programming is always deeply appreciated.

Virasat Radio Interview

On 5 June, Harinder Singh was interviewed on Virasat Radio based in Australia on topic "Battle of Amritsar 1984." You can listen to the recording, accompanied by an illustrated video.

1984 Events in Indiana

On 2 June Harinder Singh spoke at Gurudwara Shri Guru Hargobind Sahib ji in Greenwood, Indiana, and on 3 June he spoke at the Sikh Religious Society of Northwest Indiana in Crown Point, Indiana. The topic of both talks was "1984 Ghallughara," and examined: The White Paper, the Indian Army and the ‘General’, Independent Sources and Accounts of the Events of 1984, The Third Agency, and ended with the discussion: What Can I Do Today?

Celebrating Religious Freedom

On 26 June, Gurvinder Singh participated in an Interreligious service celebrating freedom of religion hosted by the San Antonio Community of Church as part of their Fortnight for Freedom series of events. Representatives of the San Antonio interfaith community gathered to share a quote from the founders of the United States, paired with a prayer from their faith tradition celebrating religious freedom.

The service was also translated into Spanish and will be rebroadcast on Catholic TV in San Antonio on 29 June at 8pm and 30 June at 3pm. You can also watch a video of the complete service on Vimeo and read coverage of the event in the San Antonio Express-News.

Article on Sikhchic

On 18 June, Santbir Singh's article "The Messiah is Here and it is Us" was published on Sikhchic:

"We all suffer at times, weighed down with personal traumas, disappointments and regrets.

According to the Buddhists, the primary truth of all of human existence is suffering.

But in Sikhi, while our Guru acknowledges that there is much suffering in life, there is more to life and the universe than mere suffering.  No, life is so much more than suffering...."
