Commemorating the Sahibzade
Over the weekend of 24 and 25 December, members of SikhRI's staff, board and community members put on a series of seminars for about 200 young people in honor of the Sahibzade and their courageous sacrifice for the Panth. The sessions also explored the ways that their bravery and confidence in their self identites are fully applicable to Sikh youth today.
More than 30 gurduaras from the Tristate area came together at the Sikh Cultural Center in Richmond Hill, NY, for the weekend's events, which also included a fundraiser for SikhRI's work in 2012, and a presentation later that evening by Harinder Singh on "Sikhi Vision: 2020" which about 300 people attended.
You can read the press release on the weekend's events, "Tri-State Gurduaras Commemorate the Sahibzade."
Later that weekend, Harinder presented "Sahibzade and Mata Gujri: How Responses are Developed" in both Queens, NY, and in Flushing, NY.

Workshops for Teens and Families in Memphis
On 7 January, Harinder Singh presented two events at libraries in Memphis, TN. The first, "Sikh Teens in America: An Inconvenient Choice," is a workshop designed to create a space for Sikh teens to understand the Sikh history and the foundations of its traditions, while also creating a safe environment where teens can express their feelings about the challenges they face as young Sikhs in the 21st-century US. About 15 teenagers attended the workshop.
Later that day, he presented "Inspiring Gurmat in You" to an audience of 35 people. The session led participants through an exploration of what Gurmat is, how to discover it in the individual self, and then how to take the next step and make it fresh and relevant when imparting it to the whole family.
On 8 January, about 300 people attended the final talk given by Harinder Singh in Memphis, which was held at the midsouth Sikh Sabha on Sah-e-Shahan-Shah Gur Gobind Singh. The talk, coinciding with the Gurpurab of Guru Gobind Singh Sahib approached the tenth guru's life and legacy in an effort to make his wisdom and courage inspiring to Sikh's everywhere today.
If you missed the article and video SikhRI made to celebrate the Prakash Purab of Guru Gobind Singh, they're still available. The article, "My Sovereign: Guru Gobind Singh Sahib" is hosted in the Resources section of our website, and the video can be found on SikhRI's Vimeo channel.
