Why is only vegetarian food served at Sidak?
It is the policy of the Sikh Research Institute (SikhRI) to develop and conduct all their programs whilst adhering to the Sikh Rahit Maryada. The only food taboo for Sikhs as per the Sikh Rahit Maryada is the avoidance of kutha meat (sacrificial or religiously sanctified meat). Whether a Sikh is vegetarian or non-vegetarian is a matter of personal choice. Nevertheless, there are varying thoughts on this subject in the Panth and a large number of Sikhs are choosing to be vegetarian. SikhRI is an educational organization first and foremost with the aim to bring Sikhs together on a common platform to comfortably engage in positive discussion and to further the cause of Chardi Kala of the Panth. Keeping this in mind, SikhRI serves vegetarian food at their Sidak leadership program as it provides an inclusive and progressive environment.
